How it works

Matching, explained.

One Spotify handshake, one formula, five certification tiers. Here is exactly what happens between signing in and seeing your first match.

Step 1 — the syncwhat we read, what we never touch

What SoundMatch reads

  • Your email address — used only to identify your account
  • Liked songs — up to 500 of your saved tracks
  • Top artists — your medium-term listening favourites
  • Followed artists — the artists you explicitly follow
  • Playlist names — used for taste signals and Blend suggestions

What SoundMatch never does

  • We never like, skip, play or queue anything
  • We never follow or unfollow artists
  • We never edit or delete your playlists
  • We never post, share or message on your behalf
  • We never show your raw library to anyone — other users only ever see taste chips on a mutual match

The only write access we request is playlist creation, and it fires solely when you tap “Create Blend” on a match — one new playlist you can delete from Spotify anytime. Revoke the whole connection from your Spotify account apps page or re-sync from your profile whenever you like.

Step 2 — the score0–100, shown with its receipts

The formula

Every dimension uses Jaccard overlap — the shared set divided by the combined set:

similarity = shared items ÷ (A + B − shared)
Liked songs — 40%

Jaccard overlap of your saved-track sets: shared songs divided by songs in either library combined.

Artists — 35%

The union of your top artists and followed artists, compared the same way.

Genres — 25%

Overlap across the genre profiles Spotify derives from your listening.

Worked example: you have 300 liked songs, a candidate has 250, and 120 are shared. Union = 300 + 250 − 120 = 430, so the songs dimension scores 120 ÷ 430 ≈ 28%, contributing about 11 of its 40 points. Artists and genres are computed the same way, then added up. Each profile shows the shared songs, artists and genres behind the number — and discovery ranks candidates by it, within the filters you set.

Step 3 — certificationhow a match earns its tier

Engagement points

  • Messages exchanged+2 each, up to 40 points
  • Active chat days in a row+5 each, up to 30 points
  • Blend playlist created+15 points, once per match
  • Weekly quests completed+5 each, up to 15 points
  • Platinum multiplier×1.25 on everything above

Points decay if the conversation goes quiet — certification reflects current chemistry, not history.

    Fresh match — keep talking to press it.

  • EP
    15+ points

    Chemistry forming. The conversation has legs.

  • Gold
    35+ points

    Certified taste — you two are locked in.

  • Platinum
    60+ points

    Rare frequency. Almost nothing tops this.

  • Diamond
    85+ points

    Once-in-a-season connection. Fully certified.
